— WHY SHOULD WE SIGN TO OUR BABIES? —
From day one, our children want to communicate. Crying, even different types of cries, can’t communicate everything. Baby sign language is key to early communication. Babies don’t start speaking until their 1.5 years old – at the earliest! Start understanding if your baby is hungry or bored or needs a diaper change early on! Knowing what the problem is will RELIEVE SO MUCH STRESS and stop the guessing game (milk? food? sleepy?!?).
— HOW TO START SIGNING TO YOUR BABY —
Just start now!
That may sound too easy, but dive in right now! Young children are master copy cats and are looking to YOU to show them the world. Start with one or two words and be consistent. “More” and “Music” are my two favorites to learn. “More” is for you – to help you learn when your child is done with eating, napping, being the carseat, etc. “Music” is for them – babies love music and associating a movement with something they love will help them understand the correlation between the sign and the sound.
You can pick any sign – just be consistent! Say the sign’s name at the same time your make the sign. It will take a while, but they’ll catch on!
— START ASL ANY AGE —
Yes, really.
Newborns to toddlers to young kids – sign language is an awesome way to communicate and once one sign is learned, the rest will follow.
— GET EVERYONE ON BOARD —
Hang these printables up in your main areas and teach friends and family members the basics. Babysitters, grandparents, daycare teachers – if everyone is consistent, your kiddo will pick it up and start signing so much faster.
